Data collection Flashcards
(15 cards)
Population
Whole set of items that are of interest.
Census
Measure/Observation of every member of a population.
Random sample
A sample in which every single item of the sample has an equal chance of being selected.
Systematic sampling
The required items are chosen at regular intervals from a list.
Stratified sampling
The population is divided into mutually exclusive strata and a random sample is taken from each strata.
Quota sampling
A sample that reflects the characteristics of the whole population is used.
Opportunistic sampling
Taking the sample of items that are available at the time of study.
Quantitative data/variables
Data associated with numerical values.
Qualitative data/variables
Data associated with non-numerical observations.
Continuous variable
A variable that can take any value in a given range.
Discrete variable
A variable that can take specific values in a given range.
Data set provided by Edexcel
UK weather stations (closest to furthest from Equator): Camborne, Hurn, Heathrow, Leeming, Leuchars.
Overseas weather stations: Perth (S), Jacksonville, Beijing (N)
Periods of time:
May - October 1987
May - October 2015
Distance from Equator
The further from the Equator, the lower the temperature, the lower the humidity.
Statistical experiment
A physical model where the results are given by experiments of a given problem.
Statistical model
A smaller representation of a bigger problem to be solved using experiments.
