Data Handling & Types Of Data Flashcards
What is qualitative data?
non numerical data
Strengths of qualitative
- rich in detail
- external validity as p’s are able to develop their opinions
- more meaning
Weaknesses of qualitative
-subjective (relies on researchers judgement) so researcher may hold bias to conclusions drawn
- difficult to analyse and compare
What is quantitative data?
Numerical data
Strengths of quantitative
- easy to analyse and compare
- more precise
Weaknesses of quantitative
- lack of detail
- lacks meaning and context
- low external validity as p’s cant develop their opinions
What is primary data?
Data that has been collected for a specific reason and reported by the original researcher
Strengths of primary data
- more reliable and valid
- targets the exact info a researcher needs
Weaknesses of primary data
- requires time, effort and expensive
What is secondary data?
Info collected by other researchers but used by another researcher for their investigation (desk based research)
Strengths of secondary
- drawn from several resources and can give a clearer insight into a research area
Weaknesses of secondary
- data may be outdated/incomplete
- data may be unreliable , researcher not there when study was conducted so unsure of validity of the results
What is meta analysis?
- process of combining findings from multiple studies on a specific topic to make an overall analysis of trends/patterns
Strengths of meta analysis
- larger sample, able to generalise, greater validity of patterns identified
Weaknesses of meta analysis
- issues of bias, researcher selecting data from previous research (may choose to neglect certain findings)
