Louisiana Purchase.
Marbury v. Madison significant because Supreme Court Case that established judicial review and set role of Supreme Court as branch of govt that determines what is constitutional or not.
Louisiana Purchase significant because Jefferson purchases land from France that doubles size of US

Significant because US declares war on Great Britain because Britain capturing US merchants and sailors.
US wins in 1814.
Seen as 2 nd war of independence.

Why was this event significant?

Missouri Compromise.
Significant because Missouri enters Union as a slave state and Maine enters Union as a free state to maintain the balance of slave v. free states.
Line of latitude at 36’30’ = no slavery north of that line

Panic of 1837 – financial crisis in US.
Causes of Panic = rapid expansion due to Market Revolution, especially expansion of credit
Effects of Panic = massive bank failures, states cannot pay off debts, people lose money that they invested in banks

Seneca Falls Significant because 2-day convention for women’s rights in NY, especially right to vote (not achieved)
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Significant because Ended Mexican-American War and forced Mexico to cede California
New Mexico territory to US. Raised issue of slavery in new territories

Significant because Compromise tried to resolve tensions between North and South to avoid Civil War:
o Abolished slavery in Washington, DC
o Passed Fugitive Slave Act
o California becomes a free state

Repealed Missouri Compromise because allowed settlers to determine if state should have slavery through popular sovereignty.
Led to “Bleeding Kansas” because violence between pro- and anti-slavery settlers.

Dred Scott v. Sanford
Significant because Dred Scott (a slave) sued for his freedom after escaping to North.
Supreme Court determined that a black person could never be a citizen, and therefore had no right to sue (and no rights at all).
Ruled Missouri Compromise unconstitutional because deprives slaveowners of their right to property.

growth of labor organizations such as Knights of Labor
