David Hume Flashcards
(15 cards)
What was Hume looking to investigate
Human understanding
What was Hume
He was an empiricist meaning he believes knowledge is gained through experience
How can you make distinctions
First perceptions arising from our senses
The memory of these perceptions is a copy of the original
The imagination can provide a weaker reaction of the original
How can we conclude that
Perceptions arising from our senses are more vivid and strong
Remembering and imagining perceptions is a much weaker and less vivid experience
What are impressions
Those perceptions with come directly from our senses that are more vivid/lively of our perception
What is an idea
Our memories and our imagines wich are the weaker/less vivid perceptions
What is an outward impression
Sensations caused by senses of the external world ( feeling the heat his your skin in a sunny day)
What is an inward impression
The immediate emotional response to our experiences (there is a difference between experiencing love in the moment and our memories of love )
What is a simple idea
These are the result of impressions creating memories- the memory is a copy of the original impression
What is a complex idea
These are made up of simple ideas that have been compounded by the imagination
What are the four ways Hume believes idea come from
Compound
Transpose
Augment
Diminish
What is a criticism for ideas come from impressions
They may claim it’s impossible to test as we lack vocab to to really discuss this with a blind person
Sometimes we have ideas or concepts without a corresponding image
What are some criticisms that impression are lively and vivid and ideas are less so
Dreams and nightmares can be vivid
Doubt what is real
What is the missing shade of blue
Argues each shade is a result of a distinct impression
Imagine someone who has seen every shade of blue but one
All blue seen by man are arranged from dark to light questioning if a Mac could imagine a new shade of blue
Hume claims the man can how ever the example is singular and shouldn’t be seen as a reason to deny general rule
What are the problems with this example
Disproved his theory
Hume does not believe in innate ideas but this theory suggests the existence of innate ideas
Opens the door of rationalism
