The Penal Substitutionary Theory- Substitutionary atonement
the substitute had to shed His blood to satisfy the demands of God’s justice
Expiation
the removal of wiping away guilt from someone
Propitiation
the appeasing of God’s wrath and satisfying of God’s justice
Obedience of Christ
Active Obedience: perfect life
Passive Obedience: suffering on the cross
Penal
adds a forensic (legal) sense to the substitutionary atonement
Penal end of Atonement
points more specifically to the removal of guilt and the imputation of Christ’s righteousness, emphasis isn’t Christ taking our place but God declaring us righteous
Justification
God declares us righteous (in a moment)
Santification
God makes us righteous (over a lifetime)
Double Imputation
God imputes our sins to Christ, God imputes Christ’s righteousness to us
How do we participate in Christ’s life now
sacraments: baptism, communion
the community of believers: preaching the gospel, service and mutual encouragement
Redemption’s Continuing Impact after death
- The Intermediary State: the dead await the judgement and the resurrections
- The Eternal State: resurrections of the body, degrees of reward, continuance of work/worship. Christ’s resurrections points to ours
