1
Q

What are a single displacement reaction and a double replacement reaction?

A

Single Displacement (SD): A metal replaces another metal in a compound.

Double Displacement (DD): Two compounds swap ions to form a precipitate, gas, or water.

Q

What does the higher metal mean on the activity series?

A

Higher on the series = more reactive.

A metal can displace another metal lower in the series.

Q

What does a net ionic equation show (3)?

A

Shows only species that change during the reaction.

Solids, liquids, and gases don’t split into ions.

Aqueous ionic compounds do split into ions.

Q

What are the 2 solubility rules to know cold?

A

Salts that have Nitrates (NO₃⁻), ammonium (NH₄⁺), alkali metals (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺).

Salts are INSOLUBLE when they have Ag⁺, Pb²⁺, Hg₂²⁺ compounds.

Use these to decide if a precipitate forms in DD reactions.

Q

What are the 2 special reactions?

A

Carbonates + Acids → form H₂CO₃ → decomposes into CO₂ + H₂O

Ammonium salts + hydroxide → form NH₄OH → decomposes into NH₃ + H₂O

Metal sulfide + acid → forms H₂S gas
