DDOL - symmetrical Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the four arguments that the family is now symmetrical?
- Willmott and Young
- Sullivan
- British Social Attitudes
- Future Foundation - generational shift
What is the main principle of Willmott and Young’s study into the domestic division of labour?
They take a “march of progress” view, studied w/c extended families in East London in the 1950s and 1973. Found trend away from women being the sole responsibility for housework/childcare and men spending leisure time with workmates, to both having role in housework/childcare and leisure time is spent together
What study can be used to criticise Willmott and Young’s study into the domestic division of labour?
Oakley - men overreact
What is the main principle of Sullivan’s study into the domestic division of labour?
Over 25-year period found trend towards greater equality as men did more domestic labour. Increase in number of couples with an equal division of labour/man doing ‘women’s tasks’. 1975: 82% husbands full time, wife unemployed. 1997: 73%
What is an evaluation of Sullivan’s study into the domestic division of labour?
What is the main principle of the British Social Attitudes Survey into the domestic division of labour?
Fall in the number of people who think, man’s job: earn money, woman’s job: look after the home/family
Survey asked who always undertakes certain tasks
who does laundry: ‘94 = 1%, 2012 = 6% men
who cares for sick members: 48% vs 36% women
shift in attitudes, effects role allocation
What is an evaluation of British Social Attitudes Survey into the domestic division of labour?
While views may have changed, results show very little sign of the ‘new man’ - couples still divide household tasks along traditional gender lines
What is the main principle of the Future Foundations’ (generational shift) study into the domestic division of labour?
Study of 1,000 adults, 60% of men claimed to do more housework than their father, 75% of women claimed to do less than their mother. Demonstrates emergence of new man
