family diversity - not good Flashcards
(11 cards)
Who believe that family diversity is NOT desirable?
Functionalists and New Right
Which Functionalist argues that family diversity is not desirable?
Parsons
What does Parsons argue about the nuclear family and it meeting the needs of a modern society?
The family is uniquely suited to meeting its needs for a geographically and socially mobile workforce.
What does Parsons say about the role of the family and how that effects society?
It performs the two important roles of primary socialisation and stabilisation of adult personalities which make society stable and effective.
What do Functionalists believe about the division of labour in the nuclear family?
The division of labour between husband and wife is natural and best suited to perform functions in a modern society. Other types are seen as inadequate because they are less able to perform functions required by family
What is an evaluation Functionalists’ view that family diversity is not desirable?
this ignores the dark side of the family - conflict between husband and wife, male dominance and child abuse.
What do the New Right believe about the nuclear family?
They agree that it is the most functional and natural type, with a gendered division of labour. But this ideal is under threat
What do the New Right believe that the decline in the traditional nuclear family and growth of family are caused by?
Social problems - like high crime rates and educational failure.
What is the New Right attitude towards lone-parent families?
unnatural, harmful to children because they cannot be disciplined properly and are a burden on the welfare state. They undermine the traditional family by discouraging men from working to support
How do the New Right believe that such problems can be solved?
A return back to traditional values - value of marriage, legal changes; divorce more difficult to obtain, remove welfare benefits, policies to support marriage (tax breaks)
What is an evaluation of The New Right’s view that family diversity ISNT desirable?
There is little to no evidence that LPD are a part of a ‘dependency culture’, nor that children are more likely to be delinquent than those in a two parent family in the same class.
