Q

Why is Manny nervous about going to Morehouse?

A

Manny is nervous because he feels that he has always been around a lot of white people and has never dated a back girl. Going to this college, Manny fears that he will “different” from them because Justyce is his only black friend and Manny has never dated a black girl.

16
Q

How does Manny feel about black girls?

A

He is scared of them and thinks they are “attitude-y and ghetto.”

17
Q

Why did Justyce call Manny a “sell-out?”

A

Justyce called Manny a “sell-out” because he allows his white friends to disrespect black people and goes along with it.

18
Q

Why did Doc go check on Justyce at his dorm?

A

Manny was worried about Justyce and asked Doc to check on him.

19
Q

A

Jared made a racist slave joke about Manny not being able to leave the basketball team until “Massah” set him free.

20
Q

What were Manny and Justyce surprised to hear about Manny’s dad?

A

They were surprised to hear that he has a great deal of authority and still gets disrespected because of his race.

21
Q

Explain what happened at the Thirteenth Street light.

A

Manny and Justyce were blasting music from Manny’s car and an off-duty white officer kept screaming at them to turn the music down. Manny turned it up louder, the man called them “n-words”, Justyce got scared and tried to turn the music down, then the officer shot them both and killed Manny.

22
Q

Why did Manny’s parents invite Justyce over after Manny died?

A

Manny’s parents invited Justyce over to give him the watch that they were going to give to Manny when he turned 18 and to tell him that Quan wanted him to visit him in jail.

23
Q

Why did Quan want Justyce to visit him?

A

Quan wanted to hook Justyce up with Martel and the Black Jihad gang.

24
What was the ultimatum given to Manny' father by his job?
Manny's father was told to either sever all ties with the "Justice for JAM Movement" or leave the company.
25
Why does Justyce decide to go against his mom and date SJ?
Justyce realizes SJ makes him happy and life is too short to not be with someone that makes happy.
26
What were the results of Garrett Tison's murder charge?
The murder charge was declared a mistrial and he would be retried.
27
What did District Attorney Jeff Rentzen call to tell Justyce?
-DA Rentzen called to tell Justyce that Officer Garret Tison was found dead in his cell at the Clarke County Jail.
28
Who did Justyce run into at Manny's grave and what did he learn that was surprising?
Justyce ran into Jared and learned that Jared was majoring in Civil Rights Law and minoring in African American Studies.
29
What does it mean when Jared calls America "color blind"?
-the idea of saying that our society today is “color blind” can be frustrating towards black people because it communicates the idea that we are all the same and ignores the fact that black people have gone through way for struggles -In other words, it ignores what black people have gone through and doesn’t acknowledge the fact that black people are treated differently when it comes to police encounters
30
Why does Justcye look up to Doc?
-He is the debate team advisor -Only half black man that Justcye knows who has a PhD -Over the course of the book, Doc gives him very valuable advice and overall helps him a lot
31
Token Black Guy
-a harmful stereotype that suggests a person is only included in a group because of their race -When Jared describes a boy in a play as a “Token black guy” meaning he was only put there to “fill in a box” or to show that the play was being diverse.
32
Where is blackface mentioned in chapter 4? Which character mentions it and in what context?
In chapter 4, blackface is mentioned when Justyce is writing to MLK. In this context, Justyce wants to express how he is annoyed with the fact that kids like Jared were essentially put into doing racist actions without understanding what it means. Additionally, Justcye can also be frustrated due to the fact that they are joking about that matter without considering what the term “blackface” really depicts.
33
Is this character a bad person for dressing up in blackface? Why or why not?
Based on what was said in the book, I believe that it was not Jared’s fault due to the fact that he was little at the time and didn't have control over what role he played and the make up he did as he describes the people who put on his makeup as “they”.
34
How do you think Justyce felt overhearing this conversation?
I think that not only did Justyce feel annoyed about how ignorant Jared and his friends were being, but he was also upset about the fact that Many did not speak up about what they were saying in addition to the fact that he agreed with all the things they were talking about when they asked for input even though he deep down did not agree with it.
35
Which part of this conversation may have been the most hurtful to Jus?
I think a part that could have been the most hurtful to Jus is when Manny agrees to our world having equality. Additionally, when Kyle describes that he doesn't even view Manny as black, not only does Jus know that Manny’s heart wasn’t in that laugh that expressed, but also it made Justcye think about this in a police setting where they would definitely see Manny as black.
