deception Flashcards
(11 cards)
“honest iago”
massive irony; reflects the deception of reputation and iagos manipulation of it
also reflects power of reputation but its weakness to manipulation, shakespeare questioning what is the point of it when deception always has the ability to win
iago about cassio, rodrigo and then the cyprus noble
“one cup upon him”
“sick fool rodrigo”
“three else of cyprus”
shows iago as being totally in control, taking the role as the director/playwright of the drama and conflict, reflects how iago doesn’t view them as people but pawns and the damage that can come out of that mindset- promotes empathy and humanism
iago about evil little plan
“make the net that shall emesh them all”
spider imagery + fishing imagery- juxtaposition of the zoomorphism of a spider web and the very human act of fishing for survival- both are for food but one is seen as sinister and one is seen as necessary evil- reflecting how iago views his acts versus how they are perceived by other audiences (justice versus just evil)
reflects the growing danger of iagos growing plan and growing manipulation of everyone and everything around him
iago after interrupting othellos soliloquy
“i once more take my leave”
iago invading othellos mind/person more and more, gaining more power and control over his actions as well as his mind, whilst acting like it is accidental
iagos invasion on othellos mind acts as an exploration of the power of words and their role in the shifting power dynamics of the play
iagos methods of manipulation
emotive vocabulary
suggestive questions
feigned reluctance
false ethos
imperatives
iago to othello (about d + c)
“ha! i like not that”
exclamation
use of “i” should have no influece over othellos own feelings on the matter
but because othello + the idea of a cuckold in general is so dependant on public opinion and reputation, othello is affected
the easiness / vulnerability to be manipulated when you value reputation more than opinions
iago to othello about cassio being friendly with desdemona
“i; indeed?
o: ‘indeed’? ay indeed”
othello copying iagos language
irony of the shift of quoting indeed to stating it, taking iagos words as fact and altering his reality / opinions
power of words and power of others opinions
iago to othello
“my lord, you know i love you”
repetition of my lord to feign respect and admiration - also keeping othello ‘in charge’ of the conversation, and iago in the role of the subservient
emphasising the futility of othellos superior role + ideas of heirachy
iago to othello about cassio
“men should be what the seem;”
iagos false ethos - by janus
dramatic irony
gent. 2 after arriving in cyprus
“of th’ever-fixed pole.
i never did like molestation view”
cannot see the pole star (used for navigation) - relfecting the lack of direction and blindness going to occur in cyrpus
pathetic fallacy for deception / blindness / clouded judgment
iago to audience
“with as little web as this will i ensnare”
zoomorphism of iago into a spider
spider web - strong material but largely invisible, victims have to walk into it, does not attack but traps
