love Flashcards
(11 cards)
othello and desdemona
“O my fair warrior!
My dear othello!”
sharing an iambic pentameter line - reflects their unity and love
othello sees her as adequate and more than just his wife, but actively sees her as powerful in her own right
desdemona sees his as more than just a soldier, the separation of love and war still working
othello to desdemona
“[he pushes the hankercheif away]”
the hankercheif is a symbol of their marriage and a metaphor to her loyalty to him
physical distance from desdemona forces him closer to iago (mentally accepting iagos accusation and physically needing someone thats not cassio or desdemona) it also shows his growing acceptance of his prejudices of women and floritians
start of violence in the play with “pushes”
emilia about iago
“i nothing but to please his fantasy”
ambigious whether it is playful or resigned, play still teetering on comedy and tragedy at this point
symbol of female loyalty even if its misplaced and despite her own mistreatment
shakespeare going against the idea that only men can love purely (amicitia perfecta)
amicitia perfecta
true love presented as a male friendship and a once in a lifetime event
(can connect to women not being viewed as human in the same way men are, they could never achieve this god-like true friendship)
othello before killing desdemona
“and i will kill thee
and love thee after.”
he loves the idea of desdemona,
can only love her when dead, passive
- wants to keep the innocence and purity of inaction
contrasts with him supporting her action against others in act 1
her actions are a threat to him
desdemona to emilia
“prithee unpin me”
the metaphorical shedding of the clothes shifts the relationship presented to something more close and intimate - beyond their expectated roles of mistress and worker, desdemona sheds societal expectations, both become just human/women
othello about desdemona after iago convinces him shes cheating
“her sweet body”
objectifying her into fruit basically, no longer seeing her as a human but as a body and a whore
othello with iago
“[he kneels]
now, by yond marble heaven,
in due reverance of a sacred vow”
wedded together
othellos complete comitment to iago, and therefore the devil
the corruption of marriage, not done out of love but anger and violence
cassio about desdemona
“she that i spake of, our great captains captain”
juxaposition to the end of the play when her words lose their value to othello
reflecting othellos contrast of general versus husband
start of the fusion of love and war
othello and desdemona reunion
“o: o my fair warrior
d: my dear othello!
othello sees desdemona as his equal- more than just a wife, but again fusion of love and war that gets blurred later on
desdemona sees othello as more than just a soldier, doesnt recognise his danger until too late
othello and desdemona
“[they kiss]”
love interrupting military business
(love and war fusion)
contrast to the later of the play
