Deck #3 and #4 Flashcards
(21 cards)
What does Emit mean?
Creating light or to give off it’s own light
What are the names of the layers of the earth’s atmosphere?
Troposphere Stratosphere- Mesosphere- Thermosphere Ionosphere Exosphere
What is one fact about each layer?
Troposphere-Where the weather is formed Stratosphere- O zone layer Mesosphere-Protection from the meteors Thermosphere-Least amount of air molecules Ionosphere-Northern lights Exosphere-Where the Satellites orbit
What are three reasons why our planet Earth is the only planet in our solar system that we know is able to support life?
- Liquid water
- Breathable atmosphere
- Right distance from the sun (Temperature)
What does reflect mean?
Reflect means light bounces off it
What objects in space emit light?
Sun and stars
What object in space reflect light?
Moon and Meteors comets planets
Why is it harmful to look at your sun with your naked eye?
Because The sun gives off harmful ultra violet rays
What are two safe methods for viewing the sun?
- A welders mask
2. Pinhole camera
Why does the sun appear to move across the sky each day?
The Earths rotation makes it appear to move across the sky
What causes night and day?
The earth’s rotation on it’s axis
What is the difference between direct and indirect rays from the sun?
Direct rays are rays that are head on
Indirect rays are spread out.
What causes the rays to become more or less direct
The way the earth is tilting
What are the two reasons that the Earth experiences four different seasons each year
The earths revolution and tilt, and the indirect and direct rays.
When do the spring and fall equinoxes occur?
March 21 is the spring equinox September 21 is the fall equinox
When do the summer and winter solstices occur?
December 21 is the winter solstice June 21 is the summer solstice
What happens to the amount of day light on each of these dates?
December 21 is the shortest day of the year, June 21 is the longest day of the year. March 21 and september 21 have 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night
What causes solstices and equinoxes
The revolution and the tilt of the earth
How do the seasons compare in the northern and the southern hemispheres
When it is winter in the northern hemisphere it is summer in the southern hemisphere
what postions do the earth, the moon and the sun have to be in for a partial or total eclipse to occur
The sun has to be directly behind the moon for a total eclipse, and the sun would be partially out of line behind the moon for a partial eclipse
what is a equinox
a day where there is exactly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night
