What is the function of a hinge joint?
Allows movement in one direction (forwards/backwards)
Elbow, knee and ankle are our hinge joints
What is the function of a ball and socket joint?
Round end of a bone fits into a cup-shaped socket
Allows movement in all directions
Hip and shoulder are our examples
What is the function of a condyloid joint?
Similar to a ball and socket
The bump on one bone, sits in the hollow formed by another
Found in the wrist, movements are forward, backward, side to side
What is the function of a gliding joint?
Also known as a plane joint
A synovial joint formed between bones that meet at flat surfaces.
Gliding joints allow the bones glide in any direction.
Examples are between the carpals (wrist) and tarsals (feet)
What is the function of a pivot joint?
Circular bones fitting over the peg of another bone.
Enables rotational movement (turning your head).
Joints are the atlas and axis of the neck
