Q

Innervation of the Larynx

A
  1. Superior laryngeal n.

* INTERNAL BRANCH (aka internal laryngeal n.): Sensory to glottis and laryngeal vestibule & vocal folds

* EXTERNAL BRANCH (aka external laryngeal n.): Motor to cricothyroid m.

  1. Recurrent laryngeal n.: Motor to all other laryngeal muscles and Sensory to subglottis

Q

Stage 1 of swallowing

A

Voluntary: the bolus is compressed against the palate and pushed from the mouth into the oropharynx, mainly by movements of the muscles of the tongue and soft palate

27
Q

Stage 2 of swallowing

A

Involuntary & rapid; the soft palate is elevated, sealing off the nasopharynx from the oropharynx and laryngopharynx. The pharynx widens and shortens to receive the bolus of food as the suprahyoid muscles and longitudinal pharyngeal muscles contract, elevating the larynx.

28
Q

Stage 3 of swallowing

A

Involuntary; sequential contraction Of all three pharyngeal constrictor muscles forces the food bolus inferiorly into esophagus.
