What is the meaning of tradition?
A state of continuity characterised by the persisting practises or behaviours that a culture or society maintains over an extended period of time.
What is the meaning of Westernisation?
The process of spreading or diffusing western culture on other foreign cultures around the globe. This process is accelerated by globalisation and assisted by modern technological advancements that facilitate trade and tourism that ultimately promote and mythologise western lifestyles and values.
What is the meaning of modernisation?
The transformative process of social change that is determined by a society’s economic, democratic and social advancements. Modernisation consists of processes such as industrialisation, technological advancements and democratisation that allows for cultural diffusion.
What is the meaning of “beliefs and values”?
the ethical, moral and personal attitudes that a person or group of people hold towards universal ideas and concepts.
What is the meaning of “cooperation and conflict”?
These terms identify the state of a relationship between two or more parties regarding their inherent motives or beliefs. Cooperation characterises the state of groups working together for a mutual benefit or interest, whereas conflict derives from a problematic state of disagreement or opposing motives/beliefs.
What is sustainability?
The state continuity in maintaining a certain level of economic assets or ecological balance.
What is empowerment?
The capacity of individuals, groups and/or communities to gain control of their circumstances and achieve their own goals, and therefore being able to work towards helping themselves and others to maximise the quality of their lives.
What is evolutionary change?
- gradual, slow changes over a long period of time
- emerged in the late 19th century when evolution became the predominant model for understanding biological change
- based on the assumption that societies gradually change form simple beginnings into more complex forms.

What is transformative change?
- philosophical, practical and strategic process to revolutionary change within society
- can lead to deep change
- not necessarily a violent change, but confronts social norms
- often in the form of petitioning, boycotting, strikes and email campaigns
