Utilitarianism

A

An ethical theory stating that the best decision is one that brings about the greatest good for most people. (Ex: Forgo Medicare funding treatments for pt >90 yr of age with a dx of Alzheimer and redistribute the funfding to other Medicare eligible individuals with a greater likelihood of benefit)

Deontology

A

An ethical theory that assumes that humans are rational and act out of principles that are consistent and objective and compel them to do what is right. (Ex: decision to resuscitate and ventilate a 23 week fetus, despite being able to pay for the care)
