POLITICS
The activity through which people make, preserve and amend the general rules under which the live.
POWER
The ability to achieve a desired outcome. The ability to influence the behaviour of others in a manner not of their choosing.

a form of democracy that balances the principle of limited government against the ideal of popular consent
DEMOCRATISATION
the transition from authoritarian states to democratic states
TOTALITARIANISM
an all-encompassing system of political and social rule that is typically established by pervasive ideological manipulation and open terror and brutality
AUTHORITARIANISM
Government ‘from above’ which is imposed on a society regardless of its consent.
CLIENTELISM
giving material goods in return for electoral support
STRUCTURE
the reoccurring arrangements which influence or limit the choices and opportunities available.
AGENCY
Agency is the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices.
FUNCTIONALISM
a theoretical perspective which focuses on the needs of the social system as a whole and how these needs shape all the main features of society.
MODERNISATION
the progressive transition from a ‘traditional’ to a ‘modern’ society
REVOLUTION
A radical change which replaces or restores a political order
POLITICAL CULTURE
the appreciation of governmental affairs, expressed through beliefs and values, amongst members of a nation.
