What is REVOLUTION?
A radical change which replaces or restores a political order

What is a political revolution?
popular uprisings involving extra-legal mass actions. (sometimes violent in character)
What is a social revolution?
changes in the system of ownership or the economic system
What is a cultural revolution?
the rooting out of old values and beliefs to establish new ones
What is FUNCTIONALISM?
a theoretical perspective which focuses on the needs of the social system as a whole and how these needs shape all the main features of society.
What is MODERNISATION?
the progressive transition from a ‘pre-modern’ or ‘traditional’ to a ‘modern’ society.
What is STRUCTURE?
Structure is the reoccurring arrangements which influence or limit the choices and opportunities available.
What is AGENCY?
Agency is the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices.
What does Cohen (functionalist) say about revolution?
Revolution is a sign that a political system is not working
What does Tilly say about revolution?
Conflict and Challenge is normal. States can withstand revolts as long as they have the coercive power to fight it
