Definitions Flashcards
(26 cards)
Electrical energy
Energy used to power electrical items.
Gravitational potential energy
Energy stored due to the height of an object above the base level.
Chemical energy
Energy created due to chemical reactions.
Elastic potential energy
An object that cane go back to its original size after being stretched.
Nuclear energy
The energy stored at the centre of atoms.
Efficiency
The amount of energy that is applied to a device and is useful.
Law of conservation of energy
A law that states that energy can’t be made or destroyed. However, energy can be transferred from one type to the other.
Conduction
Transferring heat through collisions of particles.
Radiation
A measure of heat transfer that doesn’t require particles.
Radiant heat
Heat transferred by radiation.
Reflected
Bounced off.
Transmitted
Passed through something.
Absorbed
Taken in.
Convection
Heat converted through particles.
Deciduous
A tree that loses its leaves during Autumn and Winter.
Luminous
Releasing its own light.
Incandescent
A type of light that lights up when it’s hot.
Bioluminescent
A living thing that emits light.
Non-luminous
Objects that don’t emit light.
Scatter
Light that is sent in many directions.
Vibrations
back and forth movements repeated quickly.
Compression
Pushing a material into itself.
Rarefactions
Layers of air particles spread apart during compressions.
Sound waves
Vibrations of particles in the air.
