- circumscribed, flat lesion that differs from the surrounding skin bc of its colour
- cannot feel it when run finger over it
- can be caused by hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation

- generally refers to palpable lesions that are less than 1cm in diameter

- refers to lesions located in the subcutaneous fat, below the dermis
