Muscular Christianity
Combination of godliness and manliness.
Having strong and fit body to match robust and healthy soul.
Athleticism
Combination of physical endeavour with moral integrity (trying hard and honour, truthfulness, sportsmanship)

A person who is contracted to perform for money and a means of livelihood.
Modern day amateur
Takes part predominantly for intrinsic reasons - not dependent on sport for living.
Shamateur
A person who is classed as an amateur but receives financial rewards for competing.

The way of life, especially the general customs and beliefs of a particular group of people.
Society
An organised group of people associated for some specific purpose or with a shared common interest.
Social institution
A group of people who have come together for a common purpose.
Socialisation
The way humans adjust to their culture. Schools are good vehicles for transmitting values of wider society.
Social differentiation
The way in which groups separate themselves - through appearance or behaviour.
Social stratification
A type of social inequality where society is divided into different levels on the basis of a social characteristic such as wealth or status.

Problems that affect many people within a society
Inequality
The unfair situation where resources or opportunities are distributed unevenly within a society.
Equality of opportunity
The right to access the same opportunities, regardless of factors such as race, age, sex etc
Inclusiveness
A recognition of the diverse needs of individuals to ensure equality of opportunity.
Prejudice
Pre-judging, having an opinion or attitude based on inadequate facts of inaccurate stereotypical views.
Discrimination
To give unfair treatment often because of prejudice
Social mobility
Movement of individuals up and down the social class structure
Socio-economic group
A classification that group together people with similar social and economic status
Sexism
The belief that one sex is inferior to the other, and is most often directed to women

Characteristics associated with being a man or a woman
Equal opportunity
The principle and practice of providing all people with the same chance to participate.
Gender roles
The cultural and social attributes of men and women which are manifested in masculinity and femininity
A person with a disability
Someone who has a mental or physical impairment that has a substantial and long term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day to day activities.
