Epistemology
A researcher’s belief about how we acquire knowledge about truth and reality, or nature of research (how we study something)
Variable
Characteristic or attribute that can be measured/observed and varies categorically or along continuum
IV
Variable that is manipulated; causes/influences outcome
DV
Depends on IV; outcome or result
Mediating variable
Stands between/intervenes IV and DV; explains how/why relationship exists
Moderating variable
Affects direction and/or strength of IV-DV relationship; explains when relationship exists
Research question
Broad inquiry statement about the central phenomenon
Hypothesis
Prediction that is derived from theory, literature, or speculation about outcome of study
Conflicts of interest
Study places researchers in conflict with their research/institution/personal interests
Process of consent
Free, informed, ongoing consent throughout research
Privacy
Right to be free of intrusion from others
