Definitions Of Abnormaility: Statisitcal Infrequency Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is statistical infrequency
It defines abnormal behaviour using statistical measure and measures whether behaviour or characteristics are rare/ uncommon
What does a distribution curve do
It can be used to represent the proportions of a population who share a particularly characteristic
How can behvaiour be measure on a distribution curve
Measured as normal or abnormal according to where it is placed within normal distribution
Strengths of statistical infrequency
Provides clear point of comparison between people so it is easy to test and use analytical tool
This also indicates extra help or interventions may be required for the individual
Limitation of statistical infrequency
- result in misdiagnosis
many people will become chronicall depressed at some point in there life suggesting depression is common so not be sen as abnormal
So using satistical infrequency to define abnormality means we are unable to distinguish between desirable and undesirable making it accurately identifying psychological conditions ridicule using this definition
Strength of statistical infrequency
- reliability
Includes the use of standardised tool so it has built in relatability
This means it can be replicated and can be applied to analyse data sets
