Definitions of abnormality 1 Flashcards
What is statistical infrequency?
Occurs when an individual has a less common characteristics. For example being less intelligent or depressed than a population
What is deviation from social norms?
Behaviour that is different from accepted standards of behaviour in a community.
Explain statistical infrequency?
- A way to define something as normal or abnormal.
- Any relatively usual behaviour can be normal whereas any unusual behaviour is abnormal
Explain IQ and IDD?
- Statistical approach comes in when we deal with characteristics that are reliably measured. E.g intelligence.
- Majority of peoples score will be around the average. the further we go up or down the fewer will obtain the score. This is normal distribution.
- Most people have an IQ of 100 and only 2% have it below 70.
- These people are abnormal and are liable to receive IDD
Explain deviation from social norms?
- Most people notice people whose behaviour is a deviation from social norms. For example, When a person behaves in a way that is different to what we expect. Groups of people choose to define behaviour as abnormal.
- We make a collective judgement on what is right.
Explain norms are specific to the culture we live in?
- Social norms are different to every culture and country.
- There a re very few behaviours which are considered universally abnormal.
- For example homosexuality was considered abnormal in our country in the past and continues to be abnormal in other cultures.
Explain antisocial personality disorder?
- A person with APD is impulsive , aggressive and irresponsible.
- According to the DSM-5 we are making assumptions that psychopaths are abnormal because they don’t conform to moral standards. Psychopathic is abnormal in a range of cultures
Examples of people being abnormal?
During tests where they receive lots of different scores.
Evaluate a strength of abnormality?
- One strength of statistical infrequency is that it is useful.
- It is used in clinical proceedings to asses an individuals symptoms.
- For example low IQ can lead to depression
Evaluate a limitation of Statistical infrequency?
- Characteristics can be positive as well as negative. For every individual above IQ of 130 is one below 70.
- Yet we would not think someone abnormal for having a high IQ.
- This makes it insufficient.
What is failure to function adequately?
When someone is unable to cope with ordinary demands from day to day living
What is deviation from ideal mental health?
- When someone does not meet a criteria for good mental health
