Defitions For Organic Chemistry Flashcards
(8 cards)
Homologous Series
A family of compounds which have similar chemical properties because they have the same functional group. Each member of a homologous series differs from the next by a CH2 group
Functional group
The atom/group of atoms involved in the chemical reactions of a molecule.
Hydrocarbon
A compound made up of only hydrogen and carbon
Saturated hydrocarbon
A hydrocarbon that contains only single C-C bonds (no C=C double bonds)
Unsaturated hydrocarbon
Contains at least one double bond
Structural isomer
They are molecules with the same molecular formula but different structural formulae
Molecular formula
States the total number of each type of atom in the molecule. Atoms of the same type must be grouped together.
Empirical formula
Gives the simplest whole number ratio of the different types of atom in the molecule
