Major surgery

Pain
Drugs
Preexisting dementia
Constipation
Urinary retention 
Dehydration
Hip fracture
Alcohol withdrawal

Management of delirium

A
Orientate - clock, calendar, don't transfer, continuity of care, encourage relatives to visit, familiar surroundings
Ensure wearing glasses and hearing aids
Treat constipation and urinary retention
Treat infection
Manage pain
Keep hydrated
Medication review
Encourage normal sleep cycle
Avoid sedation if possible - however 1st line haloperidol for agitation. Lorazepam if PD.
