What is it ?
irreversible syndrome with memory loss, personality change + reduced daily functioning.
four cognitive symptoms of dementia ?
Memory loss, disorientation, lack of concentration, and difficulty with speech
non-cognitive symptoms of dementia ?
Agitation, aggression, distress, and psychosis.
first-line drug for mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s?
Donepezil 5mg OD for 1 month then increased to 10 mg at bedtime.
When is donepezil potentially inappropriate
? (Contraindicated )
Patients with Bradycardia OR Heart block
MOA of rivastigmine ?
reversible, non-competitive inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. This increases Acetylcholine (Needed for memory/cognitive function)
Usual dose given of Rivastigmine ?
1.5mg BD`
When is memantine used for in dementia?
Moderate-Severe Alzheimer’s (Glutumate receptor antagonist) reduces excess brain activity
