What is democracy?
A political system based upon the concept of people having the power to decide through an open and fair electoral system, where electors can choose from competing parties
What is a liberal democracy and give some examples
A system of democracy through which certain freedoms of the individual are upheld and citizens are protected from excessive government power

What are the three types that make up democracy
Liberal
Direct
Representative
What is direct democracy & give examples of
A system of government where all citizens take part in the decision making. A modern form of direct democracy is the use of referendums.

What is representative democracy & give examples
A system of government where citizens are elected to represent others in an assembly
MPs
Councillors
What issues threaten democracy in the UK?
- Voter turnout
- electoral systems
- power of politicians
- unwritten constitution
What are rights?
Give some examples
Legal, social and ethical entitlements that are considered to be the building blocks of society
Eg right to representation, right to a free trial
Why are rights important?
What issues limit rights?
Structure government operations, make up the content of laws, morality of society
Can be limited when conflicting other rights (eg freedom of speech vs discrimination)
What are responsibilities?
Give some examples
Duties that are not optional, often enshrined in law, placed upon citizens by society
Eg pay taxes, jury duty
What are freedoms?
Give some examples
A power or right to speak and act or think as one wants
Eg freedom of the press, freedom of speech
What is equality ?
Give some examples of legislation promoting equality
Equal treatment for all within society
Equality act 2010
