Dental Infections Flashcards
MDT: Inflammation of the dental pulp resulting from untreated caries, trauma, or multiple restorations.
Pulpitis
S/S: Pulpitis
Pain
Tx: Pulpitis
Root Canal
Root Canal
Tooth Extraction ( last resort )
Pulpitis occurs when:
Caries are deep
Tooth invasive procedures
Trauma disrupted the lymphatic blood supply in the pulp
pain occurs when a stimulus is cold or sweet is applied and ceases within 1 to 2 secs
Reversible puplitis
pain occurs spontaneously or lingers minutes after the stimulus is removed; pain may cease for several days due to pulpal necrosis.
Sensitive to pressure and percussion
Irreversible puplitis
MDT: Elevates the tooth from its socket and feels high when the patient bites down.
Periapical abscess
Infectious sequelae of the pulpitis includes
apical periodontitis
periapical abscess
cellulitis
osteomyelitis
Pulpitis can cause:
Ludwig’s angina
parapharyngeal abscess
mediastinitis
pericarditis
empyema
Jugular thrombophlebitis
Tx: Pulpitis
Root canal therapy
Follow up by Crown
MDT: an acute or chronic inflammatory lesion around the apex of the tooth from pulp of a necrotic tooth.
Periapical Periodontitis
S/S: painful response to biting and percussion
Periapical Periodontitis
Tx: Periapical Periodontitis
Symptomatic tx
Antibiotics
Referral
MDT: is a collection of pus within the periodontium caused by the body’s immune response to a bacterial infection
Periodontal Abcess
collection of pus at the apex of the tooth spreading from the apical foramen, irreversible
Periapical Abcess
is a collection of pus within the perodontium that occurs along the tooth NOT caused by the root. Result of food inpaction in the sulcus, sulcus and scaled teeth.
Periodontal Abcess
visible fluctuant swelling but more severe
Focal erythemia
visible fluctuant swelling but more severe.
fistula or sinus tract that drains into mouth
high tooth sensation
Abcess
Initial Tx for Abcess:
Px relief
I & D
Antibiotics
Inflammation of the gingiva, bleeding with swelling, redness, exudate
Gingivitis
Normal Gingiva should be
Keratinized near the crowns in pink stippled tissue.
Gingiva farther from the crowns called alveolar mucosa and is
non-K
Most common cause of gingivitis is
poor oral hygiene
Pericoronitis is acute, px due to
Flap over a partially erupted tooth, usually around the 3rd molar wisdom often from food trapped.
Primary Herpetic Gingivostomatisis is
a common, self- limiting, viral infection of the mouth.
Prodromal symptoms of Oral herpies
fever
cervical lymphadenopathy
malaise
Pin head vesicles
Tx: Oral Herp
self- limiting in 7-14days
Acyclovir
Soft bland diet
Magic Mouthwash
