DEPLOYMENT_EMERGENCIES_PROCEDURES Flashcards
(21 cards)
Hard Pull
- If first pull attempt is unsuccessful
- Focus on a hard and constant arch position
- Tightly re-grip the main pilot-chute handle, in a pealing motion using your bicep and pack tray for leverage with elbow slightly bent, once pilot-chute has become dislodged deploy at full arm’s reach
- If unsuccessful perform cutaway procedures
Failure To Locate BOC Pilot Chute Handle
- If unable to locate the main pilot-chute handle during normal pull sequence,
- Arch hard, trace either the bottom of the pack tray or the back of the leg/buttocks IOT locate the main pilot-chute stow pocket and pilot-chute handle, ensure to take a firm grip
- Pull the main pilot-chute handle to full arm extension, palm skyward and release
- If unsuccessful, perform cutaway procedures
Pilot Chute Tangled Around The Wrist
- Maintain a stable arch and heading.
- Attempt to clear by sweeping, shaking wrist and/or raise arm skyward to clear the bridle.
- If unsuccessful perform cutaway procedures
Pilot Chute In Tow
- After the jumper pulls the main pilot chute handle, check over the right shoulder if the jumper identifies a pilot chute in tow perform cutaway procedures
- If the jumper is unsure and the main parachute does not deploy, check over the right shoulder again and return to neutral body position
- If the main parachute still does not deploy, perform cutaway procedures
Pilot Chute Hesitation
- After the jumper pulls the main pilot chute handle, check over the right shoulder and return to neutral body position
- If the main parachute does not deploy, check over the right shoulder again and return to neutral body position
- If the main parachute still does not deploy, perform cutaway procedures
POST OPENING EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
- If ever the canopy is in question conduct a canopy controllability check
- After clearing any malfunction a canopy controllability check is required
Canopy Controllability Check
• Flare 100% (determine flare point)
• Look left, turn left 90 degrees
• Look right, turn right 90 degrees
*Note 50% rule (if it takes more than 50% opposite toggle to fly straight, or the parachute stalls prior to 50%, the canopy is uncontrollable)
Horseshoe Malfunction
- Make no attempt to clear
* Immediately perform cutaway procedures
Bag Lock
- Make no attempt to clear
* Immediately perform cutaway procedures
Spinning Malfunction
• If the main parachute is spinning and uncontrollable, initiate cutaway procedures immediately
Line Over
- Perform canopy controllability check
* If uncontrollable perform cutaway procedures
Line Twists
- Grasp both risers with thumbs down
- Pull risers apart and kick legs in a bicycle motion
- Do not un-stow brakes until line twists are clear
- Maintain altitude awareness
- If still twisted by 2,500 FT AGL, make a cutaway decision
Streamer/Snivel
- Pump rear risers
- If not cleared, make one more attempt
- If not cleared after second attempt perform cutaway procedures
- Cutaway decision 2500 FT AGL
Hung Slider
- Pump both rear risers vigorously to move slider downward
- If the slider is below the cascades perform a canopy controllability check
- If slider stays above cascades perform cutaway procedures
- Cutaway decision 2500 FT AGL
Closed End Cells
- Pump rear risers
- If unsuccessful perform controllability check
- Cutaway decision 2500 FT AGL
Pilot Chute Over The Nose
- Flare brakes 100%
* If pilot chute is still over the nose perform a canopy controllability check
Tension Knots
- Stop the turn with opposite rear riser
- Snap the affected riser by pulling down and releasing
- Conduct canopy controllability check, if uncontrollable, cutaway
- Cutaway decision 2500 FT AGL
Broken Suspension Lines
- Stop the turn with rear riser
- If there are two or more, or any “A” lines perform cutaway
- If only one suspension line is broken and it is not an “A” line, perform canopy controllability check
Rips Or Tears
- If the hole or tear is in the bottom skin of the canopy perform a canopy controllability check
- If uncontrollable, perform cutaway procedures
- If the hole/tear is larger than the size of a helmet, perform cutaway procedures
- If the hole or tear is in the top skin of the canopy (blue sky visible), perform cutaway procedures
Premature Brake Release
- Stop the turn with rear riser input
- Immediately un-stow the other brake
- Perform a canopy controllability check
Broken Control Lines
- Stop the turn with rear riser
- Un-stow both brakes
- Steer with the good toggle and the rear riser of the side with the broken control line
- Determine the flare point using the rear risers prior to entering landing pattern
- Fly the landing pattern and conduct flared landing using rear risers
