What is Beck’s negative triad?
Beck’s cognitive explanation of depression focuses on the negative triad- negative views of the self, the world, and the future. These biased thinking patterns make individuals more vulnerable to depression. This theory has practical value as it forms the basis of CBT, helping patients identify and challenge these thoughts to improve their mood.
What is Ellis’s ABC model?
Explains depression through irrational beliefs:
A = Activating event
B = Belief (irrational)
C = Consequence (emotional/behavioural response)
what is Beck’s CBT?
CBT involves testing and examining patients’ negative thoughts through hypotheses. When patients realise these thoughts are not true, they can challenge them and change their cognitive schema. This helps reduce irrational thinking, leading to more realistic and balanced thought patterns, improving overall mental health.
what is Ellis’s REBT?
Dispute and Effect technique helps patients challenge irrational thoughts. By disputing these thoughts, they learn to replace them with more balanced beliefs, leading to a more positive emotional effect. This encourages healthier thinking patterns and reduces OCD symptoms over time.
weakness- ignores biological aspect
Cognitive explanations of depression focus mainly on thought processes and ignore biological factors. Research shows that genes can influence serotonin levels, and family studies suggest depression may be inherited. By overlooking these biological influences, cognitive theories may offer a limited understanding and lack generalisability to all cases.
strength- real life application for Beck’s theory
led to the development of CBT, which focuses on challenging negative thoughts. This has proven to be an effective treatment for depression, showing its real-life and therapeutic value. It highlights how cognitive theories can be applied to improve mental health outcomes.
weakness- cognitive bias
cognitive theories assume the patient’s thoughts are irrational, but it could be that depression is a reasonable response for issues like poverty/racism= unrealistic optimism
strength- research support for negative thinking
Grazioli and Terry assessed thinking styles of 65 women before and after they gave birth- women with negative thinking developed postpartum depression= evidence for faulty thinking
