Depth Perception Flashcards
(10 cards)
Kinetic Depth (KDE) cue
Arises as object move relative to us. As the object moves parts of its surface move across the retinal image at different speeds.
2 Issues of a reliance on depth cues
- Ambiguity
- Integration of multiple cues
How do we overcome ambiguity of cues
Prior knowledge, prior assumptions gained through experience of the world.
Multi-cue integration can not only create a unified precept but also….
Solve problems of:
- Ambiguity
- Conflict
- Reliability
Compromise
Taking an average, but taking into account how RELIABLE each cue is
Dominance
When two cues define very different shapes or depths, the brain may choose to ignore one in favour of the other.
Interaction
Some cues are ambiguous but other cues can disambiguate them.
Model of Cue Integration (Landy et al. 1995)
- Interaction Stage
- Compromise Stage
Interaction Stage
Stronger, less ambiguous cues help to resolve or “promote” weaker, more ambiguous cues.
Compromise Stage
After cue promotion, the visual system engages in a process of compromise where it combines the now-compatible cues through weighted averaging.
