Shingles antivirals: indications and doses

A

Immunocompetent: within 72 hours of onset
Immunocompromised at any time
May use if significant ocular involvement

PO - valaciclovir 1g q8hrly for 7 days
IV - aciclovir 10mg/kg q8hrly

PO in kids or pregnancy:
- Aciclovir 20mg/kg max 800mg PO 5x/day for 7 days
