How do you detect Carbon Dioxide?

A

You test for carbon dioxide using limewater. The limewater turns cloudy white if carbon dioxide is bubbled through it. Calcium hydroxide + Carbon dioxide -> Water + Calcium Carbonate

How do you detect chlorine?

A

Use a drop of tap water to dampen blue litmus paper. Hold the paper close to the container and if chlorine is present, the litmus paper will turn red and then colourless.

A

Hold a lighted splint near the mouth of the container, it should ignite with a squeaky pop sound if hydrogen is present.

Hold a glowing splint near the mouth of a container, if oxygen is present the splint will relight.
