What is thinking upstream vs. downstream?

A

Upstream- society as focus of change. Nurses think about social/political/economic influences on health. Advocacy is important.

Downstream- individuals as focus of change. Narrow view/put blame of disease on person.

A

Broad range of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors that determine individual/population health.

What are SDOH?

A

Specific group of social/economic factors within determinants of health. Conditions in which people are born in/grow/live/work. Determines physical/social/personal resources a person has to achieve their goal.

Examples- discrimination, income, education, employment

A

Difference in health that are in fair, unjust, avoidable. SDOH influence these/are the factors behind them.

A

A

Negative SDOH will intersect with each other to the detriment of health as evidenced by health inequity. Their income is lower, so if life expectancy, and they experience less chronic illness.

A

Difference in access to goods, services, and opportunities of society because of race. It affects policy as well.

A

Rural and remote communities have decreased economic opportunity, access to healthcare, food, education. There is also environmental impacts of climate change and pollution.
