GDP- total value of goods and services produce by a country in a year

Poverty line- the minimum income required to meet someone’s basic needs

Literacy rate- the percentage of the population who can read and write

What does HDI mean?

A

The human development index consists of one figure per country between 0 and 1 (higher is better). Calculated using life expectancy, literacy and length of schooling.

Population change as countries become more developed

A
  • birth and death rates, dependency ratios, fertility rates, infant mortality and maternal mortality rates all fall
  • life expectancy, years of schooling and literacy rates all increase

As birth rates fall and life expectancy increases the population will be older
