What does HDI mean?
The human development index consists of one figure per country between 0 and 1 (higher is better). Calculated using life expectancy, literacy and length of schooling.
Population change as countries become more developed
- birth and death rates, dependency ratios, fertility rates, infant mortality and maternal mortality rates all fall
- life expectancy, years of schooling and literacy rates all increase
As birth rates fall and life expectancy increases the population will be older
