Deviance=
acts/behavior that go against social norms and values
Crime=
an illegal act that is punishable by the law
Norms =
The expected standards of behaviour in a society.
These govern people’s behaviour in a particular situation.
example= queing politely
Values=
underlying beliefs that guide these norms
general principles or guidelines for how we should live our lives (a universal moral)
example= the belief in fairness and equality that under-pins this behaviour
how do norms and values change ?
by country or culture
whats the difference ? how do we differentiate them ?
norms are culturally specific while values are universal
Mores=
society’s most important moral rules
is deviance always negative ?
. Deviant behavior may be positive= heroically risking one’s life to save another person
what type of deviance are criminologists interested in ?
In criminology we are more concerned about behavioral deviance= behavior that is disapproved of.
what catagorises as deviant behaviour ?
It must go against social norms
. It must be uncommon and unusual
how is deviance dealt with ?
Sanctions

positive sanctions
informal sanctions
formal sanctions
social control
Positive sanctions=
rewards for behaviours that society approve (example= medal for bravery)
Formal sanctions=
Enforced by police, courts, schools or other institutions. They are punishments for breaking formal written rules or laws. (example= courts fine offenders)
Informal sanctions=
used for unspoken rules. When these are Broken others show disapproval in an informal way (example= refusing to speak to them because of their deviant behaviour)
social control=
all sanctions are forms of social control- the way in which society seeks to control our behaviour and ensure that we conform to its norm and behave as others expect us to.
