CCTV, tagging, police, phones
3 theories =
1) Foucault- the panopticon (panoptic surveillance)
2) Mathiesen (synoptic surveillance)
3) Feeley and Simon (actuarial and justice)
Foucault- the panopticon (panoptic surveillance)
cells are visible to the guards (pervasive power) from a central viewing point (watchtower)
. prisoners cannot see the guards (obscure power)
. Therefore, Prisoners do not know if they are being watched or not (so they constantly behaving)
Control is invisible? inside the mind (forcing authority psychologically)
. Disciplinary power has now infiltrated every part of society for all individuals
what is it a form of ?
self surveillance
example=
a driver is less likely to speed if they believe they are being watched by speeding cameras. Regardless of if the camera is on or not.
Mathiesen (synoptic surveillance) =
synoptic surveillance= where everyone watches everyone else
. When people realise, they are being watched by each other they may exercise self-discipline
Example=
motorists or cyclists monitoring behaviour by using a helmet camera, may impact the way drivers behave.
Feeley and Simon (actuarial and justice) =
An actuary is someone who calculates the risk of certain events happening
. Feeley and Simon see this as a new form of surveillance. Aims to predict and prevent future offending.
. Uses statistical information to reduce crime by compelling profiles of likely offending
