A

Home office study of 1700 participants and then 800 from ethnic minorities, between 14-25. They had to self report the number and types of crimes they committed

A

44% white, 43% black, 30% indian, 28% pakistani and 13% bangladeshi admitted to committing crimes
White people admitted to using drugs most and bangladeshi least

Farringdon and West (1994)

A

Used self reports to plot amounts and types of offending of a sample of participants over time. Found 1/3 males in london up to 32 had been convicted at least once

Longitudinal Research Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development (1960)

A

examine self reports and offending. 400 males born 1951-1954, 90% admitted to commiting at least 1 criminal offence. Take off
Low family income, poor housing and large family size helped predict social characteristics of males age was 14 and by 23 it decreases.

What are the advantages of Farrington and West’s research?

A

+ Can follow an individual through their life to look for factors that can lead them to offend such as social class and can increase verstehen
+ Support from the New Right as they agree young working class male criminals have poor socialisation from parents and come from a low economic background and this leads to inadequate socialisation
