The media and youth deviance Flashcards
(18 cards)
What did Lemert (1972) look at?
Primary and secondary deviance
What does the initial label of primary deviance include?
First a subculture needs to be labelled as deviant. This can be accomplished by someone carrying out a deviant act
What does the initial label of secondary deviance include?
The effect of the label is examined. The self fulfilling prophecy can occur, whereby a person who has been labelled as a deviant might live up to their label and enhance their negative behaviour in order to prove that society is correct
What did Cohen (1964) look at?
Mods and rockers - moral panics and folk devils: (1964)
What were mods and rockers?
two youth subcultures, who differed from each other in terms of music, dress and transport
What did Cohen examine about mods and rockers?
He examined the societal reactions to disturbances that occurred over Easter bank holiday in Clacton 1964
How did the mass media present mods and rockers?
They presented the story as a confrontation between two rival subcultures as, “hell bent on destruction” whereby violence and vandalism occurred. Cohen questioned this.
How did the mass media present the event in Clayton 1964 relating to mods and rockers?
young people wrongly labelled as being a mod or a rocker and moral panic was created which initiated a wide public concern about mods and rockers, and the media predicted that more violence and vandalism would follow
What did the moral panics caused by the media about mods and rockers lead to?
led to the police arresting more young people who were suspected of being mods or rockers, and this led to more young people wanting to identify with the mods and rockers.
What are the advantages of Cohen’s work?
- supporting evidence from Lemert and Becker - support from hall
What are the disadvantages of Cohen’s work?
- Young criticises ‘moral panics’
Why does Young criticises the idea of moral panics?
implies that the media exaggerates the deviancy problem but does not create it. Young sees deviance as being very serious and causing a great deal of distress and therefore we cannot simply reduce it to being a construction by the media.
What did Thornton (1995) look at?
Clubbers and Ravers
What did Thornton (1995) look at to understand clubbers and ravers?
Researched the club and rave scene. youth subcultures make distinctions between good and bad taste, and those that are, “in the know” have status and admiration from other members of the subculture because of their cool attitude.
What are the three cultural distinctions Thornton (1995) find in clubbers and ravers?
Authenticity, Hip and The underground
What is the authenticity of clubbers and ravers?
Club culture celebrates new technology of advanced recording techniques, synthesized sound, sampling and mixing. Artificial music is seen as authentic and DJ’s are admired as much as lead vocalists
What is the hip of clubbers and ravers?
Knowledge of obscure dance records and wearing specific clothes such as T shirts, baggy jeans and kicker boots are seen as a sign of status. Followers of main stream fashion and pop are described as, “Sharon’s and Tracy’s.”
What is the underground of clubbers and ravers?
Information about future raves is via, “word of mouth”, flyers and less formal media. Clubbers often dislike how the media release authentic information about the club scene because this makes exclusive knowledge available to all.
