signs and symptoms of Hypoglycaemic Attack (low blood sugar)

A

○ Mental confusion, inability to concentrate

○ Headache

○ Sweating

○ Pale skin

○ Mood swings, such as temper outburst

○ Rapid pulse

○ Dizziness or light headedness

○ Trembling, shaking, tiredness or weakness

○ Hunger, a craving for sweets

○ Slurred speech

○ Unresponsive or seizure

○ May progress to uncanniness

what’s the management for Hypoglycaemic Attack (low blood sugar)

A

→ Stop exercise, rest and reassure

→ Offer sugar ideally   something that can be absorbed quickly 
		◊ Fruit juice - 200ml
		◊ Soft drink - 200ml
		◊ Confectionary - apx 20 beans 
		◊ Honey or sugar- 3 teaspoons 
		◊ Glucose gels- 15g 

→ Monitor for improvement apx. 15 min

→ Symptoms continue administer another round of substance with sugar

→ Once they’re feeling better ensure they have a small meal with carbohydrates

→ If they don’t improve seek medical aid

A
→ Alter shape of eye lens
	→ Blurred vision 
	→ Breath small like acetone (sweet smell) 
	→ Rapid deep breaths
	→ Nausea
	→ Vomiting 
	→ Abdominal pain 
	→ State of altered consciousness
	→ Extensive thirst 
	→ Extensive and frequent urination

Whats the management for Hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar)

A

if they don’t have a diabetes management plan refer them to a medical professional
○ If they have a management plan follow it
○ If they are unconscious and not breathing follow DRS ABCD
If they are unconscious but breathing place them in recovery position

→ When available and trained use a blood glucometer to check the victim’s blood glucose level to confirm hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia
→ When available, glucose tablets are preferred over other sugars for the first aid management of suspected hypoglycaemia in victims
If unsure of the blood glucose, manage the casualty having suspected hypoglycaemia
