Flashcards in Diagnostic Procedures Deck (34):
1

Abdominal Paracentesis

surgical procedure of abdominal cavity for removal of fluid for diagnosis or treatment

2

Angiography/Arteriography

medical imaging technique used to visualize inside, or lumen, of BV/organs of the body wither interest in arteries, veins, and heart

3

Arthroscopy

examine and treat damage of interior joint through a small incision

4

Barium Enema (Lower GI Series)

enema in which a contrast medium is injected into rectum and x rays taken to search for lesions

5

Bone Marrow Biopsy

examine source of blood cells in bone marrow

6

Bronchoscopy

slender tubular instrument used to examine bronchial tubes

7

Cardiac Catherization

check blood flow in coronary arteries; BF and BP in heart chambers, how well heart valves work and defects in heart wall

8

Cholangiography

x ray exam of bile ducts, used to locate and identify an obstruction

9

Cholescystogram

x ray record of gallbladder made visible through use of radiopague contrast medium

10

Colonoscopy

visual examination of colon from cecum to rectum; requires sedation

11

Computed Tomography

method of examining body organs by scanning them using x rays and using a computer to construct a series of cross sectional scans along a single axis

12

Cystography

diagnostic procedure that uses x rays to examine urinary bladder

13

Cystoscopy

endoscopy of urinary bladder via urethra with local anesthesia

14

Doppler Study

ordered before fistula placed to help doctor evaluate BF through veins/arteries, uses ultrasound waves

15

Echocardiogram

test action of heart using ultrasound to produce visual display

16

Electrocephalogram (EEG)

test that measures and records electrical activity of the brain

17

Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG)

checks for problems with electrical activity of the heart

18

Electromyogram (EMG)

measures electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction. nerve conduction studies measure how well/fast nerves can send electrical signals

19

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatogram (ERCD)

test that combines use of a flexible, lighted scope with x ray pics to examine tubes that drain liver, gallbladder, pancreas. inserted through mouth, esophagus, stomach and duodenum until pancreas ducts/gallbladder

20

Esophagoscopy

optical instrument for examining inside of esophagus

21

Gastroscopy

visual examination of stomach by means of gastroscope inserted through esophagus

22

Holter Monitor

small device that records heart rhythm. records heart beats after EKG

23

Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)

x ray test that provides pics of kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. shows size, shape, position of tract

24

Laryngoscopy

examines larynx

25

Liver Biopsy

needle inserted b/w right 2 lowest ribs to remove liver tissue. may be done when other tests are abnormal

26

Lumbar Puncture

removal of centesis of fluid from subarachnoid space of lumbar region of spinal cord for diagnostic/therapeutic purposes

27

Mammography

uses x rays to diagnose and locate breast tumors

28

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

uses magnetic field and pulses of energy to make pics of organs/structures inside body

29

Myelogram

x ray film of spinal cord and spinal nerve roots and subarachnoid space

30

Sigmoidoscopy

examine sigmoid colon by means of flexible tube inserted through anus

31

Stress Test

test measuring how system functions when subjected to controlled amounts of stress

32

Thoracentesis

removal of fluid from chest by centesis for diagnostic/therapeutic purposes

33

Ultrasonography

uses echos of ultrasound pulses to delineate objects or areas of different density in body

34

Upper GI Series

upper/middle GI tract, uses barium contrast material. drink and watch through esophagus, stomach, and small intestine
