What dose diet mean
When you consume food & drink on a daily basis (everyone is on a diet)
What is a Balanced diet
A diet containing all the correct nutrients in the correct amount, contributing to good health
What are the government guidelines for a healthy diet
- Base your meals on starchy carbs
- Eat lots of fruit and vegetables
- Eat more fish, including portion of oily fish
- Cut down on saturated fats and sugars
- Eat less salt
- Get active and be a healthy weight
- Don’t get thirsty

- animal sources = meat, chicken, pork, beef, eggs, fish, salmon, tuna, cod
- Plant based = beans, lentils, pulses
- plant sources have less saturated fat and are more environmentally friendly
- aims for 2 portions of fish a week including a portion of oily fish
- Oily fish = salmon, sardines, mackerel, & trout (sources of omega and vitamin D)

- high in the 3 ‘s’ salt sugar saturated fat
- salt = adults less than 6g per day even less for children
- high salt increases Risk of developing high blood pressure
- sugar = too much especially between meals can increase risk of tooth decay and will add extra calories so cut down on cereal, cakes, biscuits, and sugary drinks
- saturated fat = foods night in sat fat can lead to high blood cholesterol, usually from animals
