Explain the importance of energy balance.
When our ‘energy balance’ is even, our energy input and output are equal. This is important as we ‘burn off’ all the calories that we consume our weight is likely to remain the same. But if we consume more calories than we burn then we will likely put on weight.
How should you follow a healthy diet?
Use the eat well plate and 8 tips as a starting point. Also try and include foods that are high in fibre as these keep us fuller for longer, preventing snacking.
How should you keep your energy balance even?
Keep our energy input and output equal
What is portion control?
We need to be aware of how much food we’re eating (energy input). If we stick to appropriate portion sizes for each meal we are less likely to out in weight.
Why should we exercise more?
Exercise ‘burns’ calories and increases our energy output. If we burn as many calories as we consume (energy balance) we are less likely to out on weight.
How to avoid being overweight.
Follow a healthy diet
Keep energy balance even
Portion control
Exercise more
How much should you exercise per day?
1 hour
What is the maximum amount of sugar for a teenager?
7 cubes a day
30g
What are the two types of sugar?
Intrinsic sugar - found in whole fruit and veg. Contained inside the cell walls and doesn’t impact dental health or obesity.
Free sugar - found in sweets, cakes, frosted breakfast cereals.
Also found in fruit juices/smoothies as during processing the sugar is released from the cells.
