Q

Explain Holmes’ theory-
What 2 things did she argue?

A

Holmes concluded that unlike Lakoff there are 4 reasons women used tag questions;
facilitation (invite more ppl to talk)
softening
uncertainty
confrontation

-She argued that women use a cooperative style of interaction to include everyone and develop relationships

-She argued hedges and fillers don’t necessarily indicate uncertainty as they have a variety of uses unlike what Lakoff said

Q

Describe Atkins power study in 1980

A

-Looked at interactions in a court room for 30 months

-Found that men from lower class backgrounds used similar language to the features Lakoff proposed women used

-Found that women of higher education and confidence didn’t really use Lakoffs features.

he concluded that these language features were used more with people of lower powers and class, meaning power causes difference in language not gender

Q

What did Tannen believe?

A

Q

How do men and women use language differently in email?

A

Females are less persuasive, more personable, apologize more and use more exclamation marks

Males are more confident and emotionally detached which is seen as more professional

18
Q

Why is it a problem with trying to get women to adopt male email etiquette?

A

-Were changing the individual when the problem is societal. People should just take women seriously anyway

19
Q

How can females email style be seen as advantagous?

A

Exclamation marks can be useful as email suffers from the fact that it doesnt benefit from non verbal cues so we can get our point across easily by using them

20
Q

What did Reiss create?

A

A Google plugin to highlight qualifiers and soften word phrases

She built it to sound more like herself and have the option to remove those, not to sound more manly

21
Q

What are problems for women in the work/email context?

A

-Women cant win theyre unprofessional if use features like ! and repeating letters but seen as rude of they dont

22
Q

Describe what Coates said about the difference in men and women’s language

A

-Argued men’s language is based on competitiveness and women on cooperation

-He said men and women struggle to understand each other as they were brought up differently

23
Q

What did Coates say was the reason for girls and boys developing different speaking styles?

A

-Says boys and girls develop different speaking styles as their peer groups influence their social language development

-Girls stay in smaller groups and boys go to larger groups that include a joint activity

24
Q

What did Coates suggest about gossip?

A

-Found that gossip was creative and constructive rather than to be pathetic

eg- it can be used to include rather than exclude others

25
Describes Jones explanation on gossip
categorised gossip into 4 1. House talk- exchange of info connected with the female role 2. Scandal- judging others behaviour 3. Bitching- an expression of anger about their role in social status 4. chatting- women talk about selves
26
How does Jones explanation prove gossip is important?
It shows that gossip serves an importance in social roles
27
What was Bakers 1982
-Boys and girls are socialized into 2 different subcultures meaning they develop different communicative norms meaning that mixed-sex interaction should be seen as cross cultural therefore miscommunication between genders will occur
28
Give an example of how Baker found womens and mens language is different
women orientate themselves to the person theyre speaking to eg, use inclusive pronouns men use verbal posturing
29
Describe Pilkingtons 1992 study
-conducted a comparative study on female and male friendships (2 group of men, wom) Said female style of language is characterized by few pauses and supporting questions And male style of language is characterized by marked disagreement and lack of response
30
What were Pilkingtons findings?
Men and women both gossip but in different ways for different purposes Eg in gossip women talk collaboratively but men will be less supportive
31
Describe Trudgills 1970 study
-grouped ppt by sex and social class -ppt read out a text that required them to make one or the other of 2 speech sounds EG- ‘shopping’ to analyse g dropping
32
What were the findings of trudgills study ?
-Men were more likely to use non standard English because of its association with working class masculinity -Women were more status conscious perhaps because women have been excluded from advancements in employement so they’ve relied on symbolic capital (value) for social advancements (conscious of how they're seen)
33
Trudgills introduced covert prestige.. what is covert prestige?
Where respect is assigned to a non standard variety of language within a specific group (don’t use standard language) Shows loyalty
34
Define overt prestige
Prestige is acquired in a community by using a standard or formal language variety associated with power and status.
35
What did Cameron argue against?
The idea that male and female language in speech is innately different
36
What did Cameron believe ?
Believes that the Myths that divide language between men and women further our expectations leading to more myths -and that noticeable language differences in gender are due to the expectations placed on us by society rather than biological factors Wrote a book called verbal hygiene= both men and women clean up their language in order to adhere to social expectations but in diff ways (how we think male and female should speak)
37
Who challenged the difference theory?
Hyde- Gender similarity
38
What did Hyde believe
Gender isn't a variable in terms of language. Males and females are more alike than they are different -Studied data on where measures may show men and women are different and concluded there aren't many differences between men and women
39
What were Hyde's findings
Are continuous attitudes to gender differences is harming equality as were not focus on what we have in common between the sex (harming the way were develop as a society)
