Digestion Flashcards
Chemical digestion
Is controlled by enzymes which are produced in different areas of the digestive system
Mechanical digestion
By chewing to break down larger pieces of food into smaller pieces of food which increase the surface area for enzymes to work on
Carbohydrates
Turns into amylase-Maltese- glucose
Found in the salivary glands, pancreases and the small intestines
Protein
Digestive enzymes: protease - pepsin- peptide- amino acids
Pepsin:stomach
Protease: pancreas and small intestine
Lipids
Digestive enzyme: lipases- lipase - glycerol and three fattty acids
Found in:
Pancreas and small intestine
Whats part of the Alimentary canal
Mouth to salivary glands to oesophagus, stomach liver bile duct pancreas small intestine large intestine appendix rectum anus
Ingestion
The taking in of substance eg food and drink into the body through the mouth
Absorption
The movement of small food molecules and ions through the walls of intestine into the blood
Assimilation
The movement digested food molecule into the cells of the body where they are used becoming of the cells.
Egestion
The passing out of food that has not been digested or absorbed (as farces) through the anus
