What does the mouth do?
Mastication.
Why do we masticate?
To break down food into smaller parts to digest.
What’s saliva?
An enzyme that breaks down food while in the mouth.
What’s the pharynx?
The passage from mouth to esophagus. It’s shared with breathing.
What does the esophagus do to bring the food down to the stomach?
It pushes and squishes.
The food that goes through the esophagus is called what?
Bolus.
What’s the process of food being pushed and squished down by the esophagus called?
Peristalsis.
What is the stomach?
A muscular bag.
What does the stomach do?
Mixes bolus and gastric juices.
What are the 2 gastric juices in the stomach?
1) Pepsin
2) hydrochloric acid
The juices of the stomach form together to make what?
Chyme.
What protects the stomach muscle from its own acids?
The stomach had a layer of slimy mucous.
If there’s a hole in the mucous, what do you have?
An ulcer.
In the small intestine; In the 1/3 sections what happens to the chyme?
It is neutralized so that tissue is not damaged.
Where does bile come from?
It’s from the liver,(gallbladder).
In the small intestine; In the 2/3 section, what happens?
Bile and pancreatic juices are added.
In the small intestine;Why does the 2/3 section happen?
To break nutrients down into their simplest forms.
In the small intestine; In the 3/3 section, what happens?
Since the nutrients are in their simplest forms, it releases energy and nutrients so that it can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Why do the nutrients and energy get absorbed in the bloodstream?
To distribute to the other cells.
In the liver, what’s inside?
A gallbladder.
What does the liver do? (It secretes….)
It secretes bile.
Why is bile secreted into the small intestine?
To break down fats.
Where is bile concentrated?
In the gallbladder.
