DIGESTION ABSORPTION Flashcards
(10 cards)
endopeptidases
hydrolyse peptide bonds between amino acids in the middle of a polymer chain
exopeptidases
hydrolyse peptide bonds between amino acids at the end of a polymer chain
membrane bound dipeptidases
hydrolyse peptide bonds between two amino acids
where does protein digestion take place
protein digestion starts in the stomach, continues in the duodenum and is fully digested in the ileum
how are lipids digested
by lipase and action of bile salts
where is lipase produced
pancreas
what does lipase do
hydrolyse the ester bond in triglycerides to form the monoglycerides and fatty acids
what are micelles
vesicles formed of the fatty acids, glycerol, monoglycerides and bile salts
they help the products of lipid digestion to be absorbed
how do bile salts work
produced by the liver and emulsify lipids- this means they cause the lipids to form small droplets
several small lipid droplets have a bigger surface area than a single large droplet so the formation of small droplets greatly increases the surface are of lipid that’s available for lipases to work on
what happens to products of digestion
absorbed across the ileum epithelium into the blood stream
