Q
What is peristalsis?
A
peristalsis is the wave-like muscle contractions that move food and liquids through the digestive system. It happens in the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, pushing food forward in a coordinated, involuntary manner. This process helps with digestion, nutrient absorption, and the movement of waste toward elimination. Without peristalsis, digestion would be disrupted.
