Function of the mouth
Food is ingested, and is mechanically digested using teeth, which is then mixed + consumed with saliva forming bolus.
Function of Oesophagus
Moves food down into the stomach through peristalsis reaction
Parts of Oesophagus
Inside is circular muscle, Outside is longitudinal
Function of Stomach
Bolus combines with Gastric juice, killing bacteria and breaking down protein to amino acids. Bolus -> Chyme
What is Gastric juice made of
HCl + Pepsin (pH 3, Acidic and 37C)
Function of duodenum and Ileum
Chyme breaks down by enzyme from pancreas in Duodenum.
In Ileum, chyme will continue to be broken down from enzymes produced by the wall of the small intestine.
-Here, most of the food and water is absorbed to the blood
